There's just something about Old Tombstone, Arizona.
Walking these dusty streets feels like stepping straight back into the Wild West, back to a time when cowboys, outlaws, saloons, and gunfights were just part of everyday life. If you love Old West history, quirky small towns, and places that feel frozen in time, Tombstone needs to be on your Arizona road trip list.
Why Tombstone, Arizona is worth the stop
Tombstone earned its nickname "The Town Too Tough to Die," and once you're standing on Allen Street, you get it. This isn't a polished, sanitized version of the Old West, it's a real historic town that leaned into its own legend, and it works.
From the legendary O.K. Corral to the old storefronts and boardwalks lining the historic district, Tombstone is packed with stories from the 1800s. You can almost picture the horses tied up outside the saloons and hear boots hitting the wooden boardwalk.
What to see and do in Tombstone
The O.K. Corral Gunfight Site. This is the big one! The site of the legendary 1881 gunfight between the Earps, Doc Holliday, and the Clanton-McLaury gang. You can walk the actual grounds where it happened and catch a reenactment.
Big Nose Kate's Saloon. A classic Old West saloon still serving food and drinks today, named after Doc Holliday's longtime companion. It's worth a stop just for the storefront alone.
Old Tombstone Western Town. A theme-park-style stop with gunfight shows, gold panning, a shooting gallery, mini golf, and a restaurant/cantina, a fun add-on if you're traveling with kids and want more hands-on Old West fun beyond the historic district.
Ike Clanton's Haunted Hotel. A historical walk-through attraction if you want a little spookier spin on Tombstone's history.
The quirky photo ops. Tombstone knows exactly what it is, and it leans in; carved wooden cowboy and Native American statues outside the shops, cardboard cutout photo boards, and yes, an actual "Tombstone: Killed 1881" coffin you can climb into for a photo. We couldn't resist.
Schieffelin Hall, the Rose Tree Museum, and the Arizona Rangers HQ/Museum are all within easy walking distance if you want more of the local history without the theatrics.

Tips if you're visiting Tombstone
- Wear comfortable shoes. The historic district is all dirt roads and wooden boardwalks; super cute, but not stroller- or flip-flop-friendly.
- Plan for a half-day. You can see the highlights in a few hours, but it's easy to wander longer than you expect once you start popping into the little shops.
- Pair it with Kartchner Caverns. Tombstone and Kartchner Caverns State Park are close enough together that they make a perfect one-two stop if you're routing through southern Arizona, especially if you're using Benson as your home base like we did.
- Check current hours before you go, since some of the smaller attractions and shows have seasonal schedules.
Arizona adventures just hit different
There's a reason Tombstone still pulls in visitors more than 140 years after that famous 30-second gunfight. It's not trying to be anything other than exactly what it is, and that's what makes it worth the stop.
